IEA SHC Annual Report 2023
June 2024 - PDF 3.03MB

In 2022, the IEA SHC Technology Collaboration Programme (SHC TCP) members and Task leaders took a strategic look at our TCP and the work we do. Over the course of the year, we discussed how the TCP should navigate the growing and changing solar landscape over the next five years. During ExCo meetings and online collaboration, we charted a path for the TCP guided by our new Strategic Plan 2024-2029 and a new vision and mission to carry us through to 2030.

Our mission assumes a systematic approach to applying solar technologies and designs to whole buildings and industrial and agricultural process heat. Based on this mission, the SHC TCP will carry out and coordinate international R&D work and will continue to cooperate with other IEA Implementing Agreements and the solar industry to expand the solar market. Our activities support market expansion by providing reliable information on solar system performance, design guidelines and tools, data and market approaches, and developing and integrating advanced solar energy technologies and design strategies for the built environment and industrial and agricultural process heat applications.

Our target audiences are the design community, solar manufacturers, and the energy supply and service industries that serve the end-users as well as architects, cities, housing companies, and building owners.

The primary activity of the SHC TCP is to develop research projects (Tasks) to study various aspects of solar heating and cooling. Each research Task is managed by a Task Manager selected by the Executive Committee.

The IEA Technology Collaboration Programme was created with a belief that the future of energy security and sustainability starts with global collaboration. The TCP is made up of thousands of experts across government, academia, and industry dedicated to advancing common research and the application of specific energy technologies.

The 2020 Annual Report summarizes and highlights all our work during the year.  The report also includes a Feature Article on PVT -- Today and Tomorrow.

In 2018, the IEA SHC Technology Collaboration Programme (TCP) members used the year to plan for the future, to reflect on past accomplishments, and to transition to a new Executive Committee Chair. All of which supported our underlying pursuit to be the leading and influencing international collaborative research program that produces high quality data and research on solar heating and cooling.

In 2016 the IEA SHC Technology Collaboration Programme (TCP) increased our activities to disseminate the knowledge that we have developed through the decades to a wider audience and thereby to enhance the expertise available to the sector. We initiated the Solar Academy to share our work and support R&D and implementation of solar heating and cooling projects worldwide. We formed a partnership with the International Solar Energy Society (ISES) to hold the International Solar Heating and Cooling Conference together with the Solar World Congress in 2017. We started three new Tasks and completed one Task.

2015 was a year of consolidation of our activities within the IEA SHC Technology Collaboration Programme (TCP). We held our fourth international conference in Turkey. We started a new task on reducing costs for solar thermal systems and completed four important Tasks. A number of other Tasks are in the development phase and we expect that they will begin in 2016. On the administrative side, we made changes to improve our operations.

2014 proved to be a year of growth and new frontiers for the SHC Programme. We welcomed four new members from across the globe – Gulf Organization for Research & Development (GORD), Regional Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (RCREEE), Turkey and the United Kingdom. We held our international conference in China. We started two new Tasks to tackle solar thermal and energy economics in urban environments and new generation solar cooling and heating systems. We completed two Tasks that have contributed valuable results in the areas of solar renovation in non-residential buildings and polymeric materials for solar thermal applications.

The Implementing Agreement for a Programme to Develop and Test Solar Heating and Cooling Systems (referred to as the Solar Heating and Cooling Programme or SHC Programme) was established in 1977 as one of the first Implementing Agreements in the IEA. The SHC Programme’s work is unique in that it is accomplished through the international collaborative effort of experts from Member countries and the European Commission. The benefits of such an approach are numerous, namely, it accelerates the pace of technology development, promotes standardization, enhances national R&D programmes, permits national specialization, and saves time and money

When the International Energy Agency (IEA) was founded in 1974, the main ob-jective of its member countries was to re-duce dependence on imported oil through the development of alternative energy sources while improving energy efficiency. More recently, concerns such as green-house gas emissions and globalization have underlined the need for international co-operation. To support these core is-sues, the IEA created a legal contract – Implementing Agreement – and a system of standard rules and regulations that would allow interested member and non-member governments to pool resources and research the development and de-ployment of particular technologies. For more than 30 years, technology collabora-tion has been a fundamental building block among IEA member and non-mem-ber countries in facilitating progress of new or improved energy technologies.
